Telomeres are specialized DNA sequences that cap the ends of chromosomes, protecting them from degradation. As cells undergo division, telomeres experience a natural shortening process. This gradual erosion ultimately leads to critically short telomeres, a hallmark of cellular aging that drives cellular senescence (growth arrest) and immune exhaustion.
As cells age, their telomeres naturally shorten, eventually reaching a point where the cells can no longer divide. This cellular aging process is dramatically accelerated in cells that are isolated from the body and carried through the cell therapy manufacturing process for both autologous and allogeneic immunotherapy products.
